Dealing With Comparison

Melissa Helser & Jenn Johnson

Jenn shares a personal story of how she overcame comparison. She grew up under the shadow of her best friend. This fueled her passion practice piano and singing. Through this God was using all the practice to hone Jenn in worship to Him. Once Jenn realized the lie she had believed she was able to step into what God had called her into.

“Comparison will kill creativity”

Melissa was the middle child of 5 siblings. She struggled with feeling like she was enough. After she got married, she felt the need for the release that came from worship. She was desperate for God and she wrote hundreds of songs in private that no-one has heard. In worship sets she would pop up on the stage for a prophetic song but never linger - she still struggled with not feeling good enough. She mainly compared herself to her husband. And struggled to feel that she was there for any other reason than because she was Jonathan’s wife. She’s learned to confront the lies that the enemy throws at her, and learned to really love herself for who she is when she’s worship leading. She has heard the Lord declare over her that she was made a worship leader since before she was formed, and it was His good pleasure to put her with a man who would draw that out of her.

Strong, powerful, gifted people should celebrate each other. It’s the Father’s pleasure for His children to delight in each other.

Jenn and Melissa share how they met and how their journeys have impacted each other. They also share how self-confidence empowers you to not be jealous or compare yourself to each other. The greatness of others around you is to encourage and inspire you, not to send you into comparison and “not enough” mentality.

Everyone has struggles and a “ditch” part of their lives. It’s not about a showreel of Pinterest or Instagram worthy pictures.

Jenn shares a personal story of beauty and makeup, and how the Lord dealt with something in her heart through it.

Jenn shares a story about her daughter, Haley, and intercession.

Melissa shares a key for worship leaders to discern what they are feeling vs what is a spirit or something external in the room.

Jenn asks the students to do some homework. Spend some time with the Holy Spirit and ask Him what lies you are believing and then let Him minister to that.

Melissa and Jenn pray for students.
