Walking Whole & Healthy

We’ve all heard that we need to be “healthy,” that the goal is “longevity.” But have you ever stopped to ask what that really looks like? And how in the world do you get there? In this lesson, Jenn Johnson shares her thoughts on health: health as a journey instead of a destination. You will learn practical tips to be emotionally, physically, …

Emotional Health “Time: 3:06-15:40”

  • “It is important to know that, especially as creatives, we have high highs and low lows.” When you are on the mountaintop with God, be aware that you will come down, but that doesn’t mean you are depressed.

  • “Watch what you watch.” Proverbs 4:23 says, “Watch over your heart with all diligence.” 1 Corinthians 6:12 says, “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable.” We can “do all the right things” and, yet, if we are listening to voices that don’t lead to Jesus, we are taking away from what God is doing. “We can’t afford it!” “So it’s really important that we learn to have a great pattern of having self-control, especially when no one’s watching. . . . That’s the stuff that builds the character that God can trust you and use you on.”

  • Now, as Jenn said, “We all fall off the wagon.” Yet, we must make sure that we “don’t sit in shame.” “You don’t have time for shame! Not one minute of shame. ‘Cause that’s not the Father. The Father loves you and He’s picking you back up going ‘Do you know this was wrong because it hurt you and it’s not leading you to Me?”

  • “Forgiveness and Bitterness. Bitterness will absolutely rot your soul.” “. . . take some time with the Lord and ask the Lord, ‘Is there anybody that I am bitter with or I’m holding unforgiveness?’ And I want you to take some time with the Lord and release those people.” “. . . work that through: that they don’t owe you anything and that you let it and them go.” This requires asking the Lord, but also stopping to really listen to His response, “and you’ll be really surprised, a lot of times, with what comes up.”

  • We must also be aware of "judgement." We can’t judge others’ hearts because we “don’t know somebody’s heart.” We all have regrets about choices we’ve made, choices that don’t reflect who we are. We must “take that lens to” our leaders and friends. “They need the same grace and the same prayer as I do and as you do.”

  • “Be vulnerable and real with people, especially leaders.” You need people “that you can talk to about what’s really going on in your life. The freedom that comes from having people in your life that are a part of your process and that you are honest with will change your life. Freedom, real freedom, comes from not having any skeletons in your closet.”

Physical Health “Time: 15:42-26:43”

  • “. . . our bodies are very important because we’ve been given a gift.” Hebrews 12:1 says, “run with endurance the race set before you.” Runners train and eat specifically. “. . . we can not play with our health.”

  • “. . . especially as a creative, you’re probably indoors a whole lot.” So, ask yourself, “How am I connecting with physical activity?”

  • “We need to have an awareness of our bodies. What you eat matters. . . . Because what you eat and your physical activity has a direct connection with your overall well-being.” There is no separation between your spiritual life and your physical life. 1 Corinthians 6:19 says, “Your bodies are temples. Honor God with your body.”

  • 1 Peter 5:8 says, “Be alert and of sober mind. The enemy is looking for someone to devour.” The opposite of alert is tired. “When you are tired or not sober, it’s really when the enemy attacks you.” We make more mistakes when we are tired. “. . . I mess up more in my life when I’m tired, and not alert than at any other time in my life. It’s when I fight depression the most . . .”

  • “. . . ask the Holy Spirit to lead you and guide you into great health.” 3 John 1:2 says, “I pray for good health, even as your soul is getting along well.” “Your soul, your emotions, and your physical health are connected. So we can’t separate them.”

  • Sleep. “And if you don’t sleep enough, you’re gonna get weird. Sleep also helps your weight loss. Sleep helps every part of your moral being. Sleep is really important.” “The Bible says He gives His beloved sleep. You are His Beloved. Sleep Good.”

Spiritual Health “Time: 26:46-32:42”

  • Jenn has a "red light, green light" system to ask the Holy Spirit about what is good for her in a moment or season. “. . . anything in your life that’s not in the Word of God directly, that you’re wondering, just ask the Holy Spirit, ‘Is this a red light or a green light for me?’”

  • “My spiritual health and your spiritual health is directly connected to the Word of God.” On this point, we cannot count the bit we read on social media as our daily reading. “Listen, we need to hear the Word of God for ourselves. God’s speaking to you something in His word that is straight to you.”

  • “Inner healing has been a massive game-changer in my life.” “Find someone who’s a trusted voice in your life and just let them pray over you and ask the Holy Spirit if they’re getting anything to pray over you or that you should walk through with your heart.” “Stay connected with the Lord with what’s going on in your life, but feel free to ask people who are known, trusted leaders in your life to pray over you.”

  • “Have mentors in your life. Connection and correction are everything.” Consult the Holy Spirit and carefully choose the people around us--leaders and friends. “You become like who you hang out with. You do.” The Holy Spirit will speak to you, “because God built you to need people.”

  • “Dream Big. Stay in your lane. And work very hard.” David was working hard, being faithful, when God made a move to make him king. “If you’re supposed to get to kingship or a leadership, God will come to find you. . . . You don’t have to earn it. You don’t have to work for it. God sees you. Stay in your land. Work hard. Be faithful. Be humble. And He will get you where you need to be.”
